Today, the SJC held that a survivor of domestic violence may invoke federal housing protections when seeking to intervene in an eviction matter. In Beacon Residential Management LP v. R.P., the WBA filed an amicus brief on behalf of the Plaintiff, arguing that survivors of domestic violence should have standing, pursuant to the Violence Against Women Act, on behalf of themselves or their children, when seeking to intervene in an eviction proceeding. The SJC agreed. This is an important decision which protects survivors of domestic violence when they seek to leave an abusive relationship. Thank you to the authors of the brief, Dorothy Bourassa and Eileen Fava. Thank you to our Amicus Committee co-chairs, Elizabeth Brusie and Afton Templin for their leadership.
