WBA APPLAUDS THE NOMINATION OF LISA EDMONDS AS ASSOCIATE JUSTICE OF THE ORLEANS DISTRICT COURT
BOSTON, MA - April 24, 2014 - The Women’s Bar Association of Massachusetts (WBA) applauds Governor Deval Patrick’s nomination of Lisa Edmonds as Associate Justice of the Orleans District Court.
Lisa Edmonds has served as Assistant District Attorney for the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office since 1996. She has had extensive trial experience in the Juvenile, District and Superior Courts and served as the Chief District Court prosecutor from 2001 to 2006. In 2009, Lisa became the Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit where she supervises domestic violence prosecutions in five district courts. In that role, she created a High Risk Task Force of law enforcement, social service agencies, domestic violence advocates and the District Attorney’s office to identify and target cases presenting a great risk of homicide or an escalation of violence. She is a graduate of Suffolk University Law School (J.D. cum laude, 1995). Lisa’s recent accolades include the top prosecutor award as part of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s 2014 Access to Justice Awards.
Lisa Edmonds was elected to the WBA Board in March, 2010 as the first regional director for the Cape and Islands. In her director role and as co-chair of the WBA Cape Cod & the Islands Committee, she has prioritized creating a strong network of women lawyers in the region to support and promote the equal representation of women in all areas of law. Lisa recently served as a resource to the Massachusetts legislature in efforts to strengthen the state’s domestic violence laws, and she has routinely discussed the issue of accord and satisfaction at the WBA Annual Legislative Breakfast and before the legislature’s Judiciary Committee. Lisa has also educated community organizations, including the Cape and Islands Domestic Violence Counsel and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, on the importance that this legislation will play in fighting domestic violence.
WBA President Kara DelTufo stated, “I am thrilled that Governor Patrick nominated Assistant District Attorney Lisa Edmonds to the District Court bench. Through the WBA, we have witnessed Lisa’s commitment to issues such as the fight against domestic violence and her dedication to creating a forum for women lawyers in the Cape & Islands to share expertise, experience and encouragement. As a longtime Assistant District Attorney, Lisa has shown exemplary legal skills as well as service to the community by initiating important community programs, such as the Juvenile Diversion Program and the High Risk Task Force. We look forward to the Governor’s Council’s confirmation of Lisa as a member of the judiciary.”
If confirmed, Lisa will fill the vacancy on the Orleans District Court created by the retirement of The Honorable Brian R. Merrick.
