The National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations (NCWBA) recognized the WBA of Massachusetts (WBA) with its 2017 Public Service Award at its annual Summit on August 11, 2017 in New York City. The WBA was honored for its work on the Pay Equity bill which was signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker on August 1, 2016. This comprehensive law – the first of its kind in the nation - helps address the gender wage gap by clarifying the definition of comparable work, a longtime priority of the WBA. The law also allows employees to discuss their salaries without the threat of retaliation from their employer and bans the practice of requiring salary history on job applications before a job offer is made. The law also encourages employers to evaluate their own pay practices and implement changes to end pay disparities voluntarily.
WBA President Michele Liu Baillie accepted the award on behalf of the WBA.
