Our family law clients are often impacted by immigration. The relief covered in this training may help our clients stay safe after their 209A or Family law case resolves. This training will provide our Family Law Project volunteers an overview of immigration relief available to survivors of domestic abuse.
The presenters will offer general guidance on spotting potential immigration issues while working with your client:
- The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA);
- Asylum
- Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) Classification: For certain children who have been subject to state juvenile court proceedings related to abuse, neglect, abandonment;
- U Visas: For victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement;
- T Visa: Allows certain victims of human trafficking and immediate family members to remain and work temporarily in the United States.
