For many people, faith may be a source of strength and guidance, an important part of their identity and community, and an essential element in decision making and healing. Many survivors of domestic abuse turn to their faith for support when faced with abuse before reaching out to other services. Unfortunately, many faith leaders and community members do not understand abuse and may give survivors incorrect and unsafe support. At the same time, advocates, law enforcement, etc. may not understand the role of faith in their clients' lives and provide support that is not culturally relevant.
